Once you have determined what type of mental health professional you should be seeing, you may have many choices for individuals in that field. One important fact that not enough clients know is that how they feel about their therapist has a direct impact on the results of the therapy. Therefore it is important to try to get a feel for a potential therapist to see if they might be a good fit for you and your family.
- Talk to people you know- Talk to friends and family members to see if they know of any therapists in your area. If they have experience with anyone in particular, ask what they liked or did not like about them.
- Look online- Many therapists now have websites, blogs, facebook pages, and even twitter accounts. Look online for therapists in your area and look at what they write. This will give you a feel for who they are and if you agree with their philosophies as there are many different ways to conduct therapy.
- Call the therapist- It is important to talk briefly to a therapist or at least the receptionist/office manager before you schedule an appointment.
