Better Than I Used To Be

I was listening to the radio the other day after having a session with a client who struggles with staying motivated to make changes when he sees all of the things that he wants to change ahead of him, and heard a song that I believe speaks to these feelings. I think so many people are reminded constantly of the things they want to change and of the things other people think they should change (that they see truth in as well) and become overwhelmed by the amount of work that it will take to even see a difference that they end up feeling paralyzed in regards to this issue. They go into denial or just brush it off and don’t get the help that they need or even begin working on these things themselves. Whether it be making amends with situations you have been in, experiences you have had, strengthening your relationships, or changing your goals and values for your life, let this song sing to your heart and listen to the message that it all doesn’t have to happen at once. Get started, make some changes, but take some of the pressure off of yourself by remembering that it is all a work in progress. Just because you have lived your life one way doesn’t mean you have to continue that way. As long as you are better than you used to be then you are heading in the right direction!

Tim McGraw
“Better Than I Used To Be”

I know how to hold a grudge
I can send a bridge up in smoke
And I can’t count the people I’ve let down,
the hearts I’ve broke
You ain’t gotta dig too deep
If you wanna find some dirt on me
I’m learning who you’ve been
Ain’t who you’ve got to be
It’s gonna be an uphill climb
Aww honey I won’t lie

I ain’t no angel
I still got a few more dances with the devil
I’m cleanin’ up my act, little by little
I’m getting there
I can finally stand the man in the mirror
I see I ain’t as good as I’m gonna get
But I’m better than I used to be

I’ve pinned a lot of demons to the ground
I’ve got a few old habits left
There’s still one or two I might need you to help me get
Standin’ in the rain so long has left me with a little rust
But put some faith in me and someday you’ll see
There’s a diamond under all this dust
